Jerome Burg, a Google Certified Teacher, is the founder of Google Lit Trips, which he created after noticing how travel can be traced during a Google Maps training session.
In the webinar, Jerome Burg explains how his Google Lit Trips are designed and gives participants an overview of the site. Jerome Burg created Google Lit Trips as a way to engage students with literature and encourage cross-curricular and cross-cultural studies. Basically, a Google Lit Trip allows readers of a book to follow the path of the book's characters through Google Earth and pop-ups that are embedded. The pop-ups on a particular location can be links, images, or videos that explain related content. For example, in the Lit Trip for The Kite Runner, a pop-up on the location of Ghazi Stadium in Kabul, Afghanistan, explains the practice of stoning during athletic events, which occurs in the novel. Other pop-ups on the Lit Trips ask students high-level questions designed to make them contemplate the themes of the novel.
Burg explained that Google Lit Trips can be used as
they are posted on the site, or they can be downloaded and edited. He asked, however, that edited Trips not be
shared with others unless he himself checks them for quality and accuracy. On this note, he added that he does accept
Lit Trips made by others for his site, but he must review them first. The site does not work as a wiki. He also explained that Lit Trips made by
students are labeled accordingly so that teachers are aware of this. Of course, Lit Trips made by teachers differ
greatly from Lit Trips made by students.
